Vanderbilt is coming off of one of their best seasons of all time where they finished the season at 9-4 and on a 5 game winning streak. However, since then so much has changed starting at the top. James Franklin is gone but Vanderbilt was able to make a great hire in Derek Mason from Stanford. While Franklin certainly did great things for the Vanderbilt program I would argue that Mason has the potential to be the even better coach. If I was Penn State, I honestly think I would rather have Mason than Franklin. But Penn State is not of our concern here.
Mason has been coaching for 20 years, working his way up all the way from the likes of Mesa Community College, to the NFL as a defensive backs coach for the Minnesota Vikings, to Stanford where he quickly rose from defensive backs coach to defensive coordinator. At Stanford, Mason was able to build some of the most feared defenses in the nation. He is known for building a defense that is incredibly sound fundamentally that could shut down even the most high powered offenses (see the last to years Stanford played Oregon). That is what Mason is going to bring to Vanderbilt.
That being said, the Commodores are in for a rebuilding season this year. They lost the best receiver in Vanderbilt history with Jordan Matthews departure to the NFL and you also can't underestimate the losses in the secondary. Lastly, it didn't help what Franklin did stealing a bunch of recruits and taking them with him to Penn State making it very tough for Mason to fill out his class late in the process.
This will be a rebuilding year for the Dores but you can't help but think the future is bright for the Commodores.
